ABOUT

We are a relatively new club (founded in 2018), with a successful past! Formerly the Saltwood Camera Club which started in 2011 as a community initiative by the Saltwood Parish Church. Since then, many members have come from across the district so we have renamed ourselves ‘Hythe District Photographic Club’ to reflect that and we have now changed our venue to one in Hythe. We also changed from a ‘camera’ club to a ‘photographic’ club because an increasing number photographs are now being taken on smartphones and tablets. We meet at the Hythe Sports Pavilion, South Road, Hythe from 7pm to 9pm every second Thursday of the month (doors open at 6:30pm), where members review the monthly project, listen to guest speakers or participate in workshops and practical sessions.

From time-to-time the club holds photoshoots, either linked to the monthly project or something of photographic interest.

The club has a 'WhatsApp' group to alert full members of photo opportunities or other events of interest.

The club has a private Facebook Group for both full/student members and guests: https://www.facebook.com/groups/824710414258709/

Projects

Every month there is a set project to photograph. The projects are completely open to interpretation by each member so the results can be very varied and interesting. At the monthly meetings the projects are then reviewed by members so that everyone can learn different skills from each other. There are no competitions involved but each month members select the photograph(s) which they think best represents the project subject. Project photographs can be viewed on the Project Galleries page.

Workshops

From time-to-time the club will have workshops and demonstrations on photography techniques, which would also align with one of the monthly projects. There will also be tutorials and guest speakers talking about the basics of creating good photographs to simple post-processing techniques, using various types of software.

Photoshoots

We try to get out more! Linked with our project of the month, photoshoots in the past have included local places, like St. Leonard's Church, Wyckhurst Gardens, Sandwich Seal Safari, Biddenden Vineyard, Brenzett Aeronautical Museum, Dungeness, Hythe, Folkestone, Tenterden, Saltwood, and more distant places such as London. Photographs from the photoshoots can be viewed on the Photoshoot Galleries page.

Presentations
In addition to talks from our own members, we invite people with specialist photography skills, or just entertaining information, to come and tell us about a range of subjects. The main presentation is at the end of each year when all project photographs are reviewed by a specialist and tips provided on how to add a ‘wow’ factor. This is combined with a fund raising evening for a local charity, which in the past has been for the Pilgrims Hospice and for motor-neurone research.
